FamilyKind was proud to send a group of highly skilled mediators and parent educators, from New York, New Jersey, and Westchester (pictured above), to work with law students at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University on November 12, 2016.
It was quite inspiring to mentor young, bright people, and to work with esteemed faculty who understand and enthusiastically embrace the need to support families in a myriad of ways. The day was spent interacting with the students around mediation and parent education concepts, vital information and skills the students will use to assist their future clients affected by separation and divorce.
This time of year is a joyous time of year for Jewish families to get together and celebrate the holidays. It is also a time for increased conflict for separated or divorced parents who want to spend time with their children. Couples should sit down with a Jewish calendar and create a schedule so that everyone can spend quality time together. A mediator can assist the couple when communication is difficult.
Typically parents will alternate the holidays on a yearly basis. For more observant families parents will need to communicate in detail about travel plans since they will often not be permitted to drive. Phone calls often must be arranged before or after the holiday in order to be compliant with the Sabbath rules. Jeswish dietary laws must also be observed and compliance with such rules must be explicitly discussed.

Helene Bernstein Speaks at the New York State Council on Divorce Mediation Conference in Saratoga Springs
Recently I was asked to speak at the New York State Council on Divorce Mediation in Saratoga Springs New York. The Council produced several videos regarding my thoughts on child custody and how to create an amicable resolution and protect your child from a nasty fight.
September is an exciting and busy time in the life of a parent. If you are separated from your spouse or parent of your child, have you resolved the following school issues?
- Who will receive important information from your child’s school?
- Is your name on the emergency card at your child’s school?
- Do you know when your child’s back to school night is and other important events at school?
- Who gets to decide what kind of extracurricular activities your child can attend?
Mediation is a process which allows parents to work out these types of issues without resorting to the aid of the court. Helene Bernstein is a mediator and family law and divorce attorney. Contact Helene at helene@hbernsteinlawandmediation or 917-748-9854 for a consultation today.
